Struggles Continue for Darmstadt Despite Strong Performances: A Look at Julian Justvan’s Impact

Played well again, scored again. But again no victory. It was difficult for the Lilies to see the 1-1 draw in Bremen as positive. But the confidence remains at the bottom of the table. A winter newcomer plays a significant role in this.

It was the number one topic in the Darmstadt camp on the Weser: the supposedly last-minute winning goal by Tim Skarke in the seventh minute of stoppage time, after Werder goalkeeper Zetterer had previously shot the 98 attacker during his counter-attack solo during a failed attempt to clear the ball had. But Skarke’s hand was in play, even if it was on – which, according to the strict rules, correctly led to the hit being disallowed. The second, after a Skarke goal had also been correctly disallowed for offside a few minutes earlier.

“It was pure emotion for us to have the little bit of luck that we had been waiting for for weeks after the goal was denied,” said Julian Justvan, describing the final seconds from Darmstadt’s perspective. “It’s extremely bitter that it ends like this again and feels like a defeat. You think you’re in the wrong film.”

“We fought our way back”

When the waves of emotions calmed down later, Justvan quickly came up with a sober analysis of this 1-1 draw in Bremen, which certainly speaks of confidence. “We have to take the positives with us. We didn’t start the game well, but then we fought back and equalized. In the second half the game was open and could go either way. Now, unfortunately, we are left with a draw. That We’ll still take this point with us and continue to look forward.”

“Shoot at goal to score a goal”

After his winter move from Hoffenheim, Justvan once again proved to be the scorer of an important goal in Bremen. Like recently in the 2-2 draw at home against Frankfurt, it was the 25-year-old who scored again. “It was a good ball win by Matthias Bader. I took the ball with one contact, then the second contact – finish,” the goalscorer described briefly and succinctly. “The coach says we have to shoot at goal to score. I’m glad the ball deflected and went in. There was luck there.”

Otherwise it didn’t happen, once again from the perspective of the “lilies”, who complained about the lack of yield. “It’s always a draw, unfortunately. Of course that annoys us too,” says Justvan, who remains optimistic. The desire for a “threesome” after a long dry spell is increasing. “It’s also clear that this has to happen in the next games. There’s still a very good atmosphere in the team, the energy is there.” After the draws against Frankfurt and in Mönchengladbach, the first win of 2024 should now come at home against Augsburg. Justvan’s hope: “We realize that we are close and can win these games. Maybe you just need a little bit of luck and that you can then carry the momentum with you. That’s what we’re working towards.”
