Stefanos Tsitsipas set to compete in Acapulco with renewed energy and motivation

Stefanos Tsitsipas continues in Mexico, where he will participate again in the Acapulco tournament, the one he won in the doubles category in 2022 with Feliciano López. This time he arrives with renewed energy and very motivated after being a finalist in Los Cabos. This is what he himself tells it, in addition to talking about his schedule and his objectives.

After having progressed to the ATP final in Los Cabos, Stefanos Tsitsipas will once again try to take the title, this time in the Acapulco tournament. And the Greek will make his third appearance in a place where he has already been to a semi-final and a final. However, he still hopes to end up taking the title in a land that he loves and where Mexican support for his figure is incredible. Very affected by the state of the city after Hurricane Otis that hit the coast in October last year, Tsitsipas spoke with TennisTv about his feelings in Acapulco: “I have had a great start to the tournament every time I have reached the semifinal and the final. I think I’ve had a number of good matches on these courts, but I always needed a little more towards the end of the tournament to close it out and win it, which is ultimately my dream that week. It hasn’t happened, but I keep coming back hungrier, increasing my desire to get the trophy and I hope for the best this week and for my tennis to verify it.”

Thus, the Greek’s journey in Mexico continues after falling in the final of the previous tournament against Casper Ruud and whose defeat he believes was the result of a combination of factors: “I feel that I was not well prepared to face him in the final. Maybe I was a little exhausted, I lacked a little patience on the track. Those things I’m trying to work on, but I’m close. I think that even though I reached the final, I am still very close to getting a good result. I just need to stay resilient and move forward with the same mentality and attitude that I always impose on myself when I’m really hungry to do big things in a tournament.”

In 2023, the number 12 in the ranking played up to 75 games in what was a calendar quite loaded with commitments. In addition, Tsitsipas had to deal with back problems, problems that he still struggles to overcome at 100%. Will he continue playing as much in 2024 or will he give himself a bit of a break? “I hadn’t really thought about it, but I think that’s also a good sign that I’ve been playing a lot. I think I participated in about 25 or 26 tournaments last year. There are many weeks, but let’s not forget that I have also gained a lot. I’ve come far in tournaments over the years and I’ve played a lot of matches in singles tournaments, which helps reach those numbers. As long as my body is healthy and I’m willing to go out there and give my 100% every time, I don’t see any reason to stop and consider anything less than that,” said the Greek.

Will the Olympics disrupt your calendar?

This 2024 looks very special for the best players in the world, since the Paris 2024 Olympic event is present in their heads and also conditions their calendar planning. Stefanos has not been left behind and reveals his objectives for this season. “The ultimate ambition for 2024 would be a Grand Slam title and a Masters 1000 title. I would also love to see myself with an Olympic medal of any kind at the Paris Olympics. And, thinking about it now, probably at that moment he would reduce the pace and play fewer games,” the Greek sympathetically confessed that he will make his debut in Acapulco tonight against Román Safiullin.
