STC Salzburg: A New Era for Tennis and Football

The STC is breaking new ground in Salzburg tennis in partnership with the UTC Eugendorf and the UTC Radstadt and with the support of the TC Piding. There has also been a similar development in football in recent years. After the merger, the Bulls and the Ducks became the Salzburg Ducks.

STC Salzburg is eyeing the Bundesliga title in the future

According to sports director Valentin Snobe, the medium-term goals are: “After promotion, we want to establish a team in the first Bundesliga and play for the title next year. The plan is also to promote Eugendorf to the second league. We want to focus on all of this to increase the promotion of talent by joining forces,” emphasized Snobe to SALZBURG24 on Thursday (see video above).

The parochial mentality that should also be present in tennis is therefore put aside. The STC Team Salzburg is competing in the 1st Bundesliga this year and was able to significantly strengthen itself with, among others, Salzburg’s best tennis player, Lukas Neumayer. League competitor Anif is also said to have been interested in him. “Luki should serve as a figurehead and set the direction,” explained the STC board member.

Neumayer is moving from Radstadt to Salzburg

“I had two wonderful years in the Bundesliga with UTC Radstadt. With the Team Salzburg project it is probably possible to play for the Bundesliga title quickly. That would certainly be a goal of mine,” explained Neumayer. He is already looking forward to the home games in the Volksgarten. That’s where he celebrated his greatest success to date at the ATP Challenger in the summer by reaching the final. Neumayer is anticipating his big breakthrough this year and wants to play his first Grand Slam tournament and break into the top 150.

Also new to the team as top performers are Gabriel Schmidt (previously Mauthausen) and Dominik Wirlend. Contrary to the trend in Austria’s highest tennis league, from which teams withdraw voluntarily and primarily for economic reasons year after year, the people of Salzburg are relying on stability.

The goal is to spearhead tennis in Salzburg

In cooperation with the UTC Radstadt (withdrew from the 1st Bundesliga) and the UTC Eugendorf (has two teams in the regional league A), the 1st Salzburger TC will now play in the 1st Bundesliga as STC Team Salzburg. There is also a cooperation with TC Piding, a Bavarian club in which a lot of young people from Salzburg play.

“We don’t want to buy a championship team, but rather want to implement a sustainable project,” said Snobe. In the long term, the STC team should be the spearhead of Salzburg team tennis in the Volksgarten. “We also want to reduce the gap between East and West, which is quite large.”

Three clubs are working together

According to Gerald Kamitz, coach of Lukas Neumayer and the UTC Radstadt, it would not be compatible with three Salzburg teams in the 1st Bundesliga. “The proportion of legionnaires would have been immense. With the Salzburg team, we may be able to become the first port of call for top talent in the region for years to come. That’s why it’s a nice thing for us to have Lukas Neumayer, Maximilian Neuchrist and ex-world-class player Lukas Rosol to join the Salzburg team,” said Kamitz.

The start of the season in Bundesliga Group B, in which the top four was the goal this year, is on May 11th at the home game against Steyr. The big Salzburg derby against Anif will go into round two on May 20th.
