Spanish Representatives at Movistar Chile Open: Mixed Results as Martinez Advances and Carballés Falls

Heads and tails for the two Spanish representatives who began their journey at the Movistar Chile Open, the Santiago Tournament, since Pedro Martínez managed to advance to the round of 16 while Roberto Carballés fell in the first round.

Martínez added an important victory to return to the Top-100 of the ATP ranking after beating the Italian Francesco Passaro 6-4 and 6-1 in one hour and 40 minutes in a match in which he cemented his victory thanks to his high service percentage and attacking Passaro’s rest well, breaking his serve up to five times.

In the round of 16, Martínez will face Facundo Díaz Acosta, champion this year in Buenos Aires, who won the Argentine duel against Pedro Cachín after coming back 5-7, 6-3 and 7-6 (2) after three hours and eight minutes.

The other Spaniard in the fray this Monday, Roberto Carballés, had worse luck, who stood up but ended up succumbing to the Frenchman Corentin Moutet 6-3, 5-7 and 6-2 after almost three hours of play. Moutet’s success in the rest, which allowed him to break Carballés’ serve four times, allowed the Frenchman to get the match and the victory back on track.

The day closed with the victory of the Argentine Federico Coria against the Slovakian Alex Molcan by 6-1 and 7-6 (1) and that will allow Coria to face the Chilean Nicolás Jarry in the second round, the first favorite for the title and the main claim for the public at this Movistar Chile Open in Santiago.
