Second division leaders FC St. Pauli lose at FC Magdeburg

FC St. Pauli lost a game in the league for the first time since April 2023. The league leaders lost 0-1 (0-0) at 1. FC Magdeburg on Saturday. In front of 25,187 spectators, Baris Atik scored the decisive goal in the 72nd minute after a mistake by Pauli goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. Magdeburg climbed to eleventh place thanks to the win.

The Hamburg team started very aggressively against their favorite opponent, against whom they had never lost before. Johannes Eggestein missed the early lead (5th). The FCM only rarely appeared in the opponent’s penalty area in the first 20 minutes. Herbert Bockhorn was denied by Vasilj, who responded strongly with a foot save (13′). After 25 minutes, the hosts got the game and their opponents under control without creating any great chances.

St. Pauli was more active again in the second half. But Magdeburg was waiting for a counterattack like Luc Castaignos, who was denied by Vasilj in the 60th minute. The goalkeeper made more and more careless mistakes when making passes in his own penalty area. The FCM used one of them through Atik. The guests seemed increasingly out of ideas in the opposing penalty area.

Karlsruhe without goals in Braunschweig

After a series of eight games without defeat, Karlsruher SC suffered a setback. The Baden team lost 0:2 (0:1) at Eintracht Braunschweig on Saturday. Hasan Kurucay with a penalty kick (13th minute) and Ermin Bicakcic (75th) scored for the in-form hosts, who have now won five of the last six games and have every chance of staying in the league again. The KSC is still in the middle of the table with 28 points.

The Karlsruhe team dominated the game. But despite having more than 60 percent of the ball, coach Christian Eichner’s team rarely had any chances. The guests couldn’t think of anything against Braunschweig’s strong, compact defense.

Above all, the outstanding Bicakcic directed the defense and was also present on the offensive. He took the penalty to take the lead and was the hero of the Eintracht fans among the 19,595 spectators in the second half with his goal. The hosts could have won even more, but missed a few counterattack opportunities.

Point for Düsseldorf and Elversberg

For Fortuna Düsseldorf the wait for their first league win this year continues. In the 1-1 (1-0) draw against SV Elversberg on Saturday, coach Daniel Thioune’s team remained unsuccessful in their fourth game since the end of the winter break. Unlike the cup coup a week and a half earlier at FC St. Pauli, which paved the way to the semi-finals, there was a lot to be desired for the sixth-place team in the duel with the promoted team.

In front of 31,034 spectators in the Merkur Spiel-Arena, starting eleven debutant Joseph Boyamba (53rd minute) gave the guests a deserved point win. Previously, Isak Johannesson (19th) had put Fortuna in the lead.

This time the game was not as clear as in the first leg, when the Düsseldorf team had inflicted their opponents’ heaviest defeat in the second division to date with a score of 5-0. Although the Thioune team dominated the action in the first half, they missed many good chances. With the goal conceded by Johannesson, who put the ball into the net from close range, Elversberg was well served until the break.

After the restart, the promoted team increased their resistance. Boyamba’s second goal of the season was the reward for more wit and courage. In a largely uneventful final phase, Fortuna was no longer able to really unsettle the opposing defense. The only thing that caused excitement was the supposed Elversberg winning goal by Wahid Faghir (89th), which was disallowed due to an offside position.
