Sebastian Ofner celebrated his first victory after four opening defeats in a row on the ATP tour. The 27-year-old Styrian beat the Mexican Ernesto Escobedo 6:7 (7/9) 6:4 7:6 (7/4) after three hours at the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco on Tuesday night.

As number 37 in the ATP rankings, Ofner was a huge favorite against number 493, but had a very difficult time against his opponent, who had a wildcard.
Wolfgang Thiem’s protégé will now face Alex de Minaur, who has been playing well recently, in the round of 16 of the $2.377 million hard court tournament. The Australian is number nine in the ATP ranking behind Alexander Zverev (GER/ATP-6th) and Holger Rune (DEN/7th) as number three.
Return to hard court
Ofner recently had a flop on his South American tour and lost his first match in Cordoba, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. He had previously suffered a five-set defeat at the Australian Open on the tour.
After Rio, Ofner called it a mistake that he didn’t stay on the hard court. Now he has three hardcourt tournaments planned including Acapulco, and after Acapulco he will play the Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami.
