Irene Schouten once again won World Cup gold in the 3,000 meters on Friday. Two weeks before the World Championship distances, she was the best in Quebec, ahead of Joy Beune and the Canadian Valerie Maltais. The Dutch played a supporting role in the 5,000 meters for men, but they did grab a third ticket for the World All-round Championships.
Schouten won her first World Cup gold in the 3,000 meters since November 2022. This season it did not really work out. She slowly found the connection. She finished second behind Beune last week in Salt Lake City. She came third in the World Cup competition before that.
In Quebec, Schouten achieved a time of 4:01.11 in the fifth stage. In the last stage, Beune, who was the best last week, rode to the second fastest time with 4.02.62. Marijke Groenewoud could not convince with complaints of a cold and finished eighth (4.04.80). Sanne in ‘t Hof came ninth (4.05.92).
With the win, Schouten builds up confidence towards the World Championships, which will be held from February 15 to 18. Earlier this season, Schouten only won World Cup gold in the mass start. She will also compete in that part at the World Championships in Calgary.

Bloemen wins the World Cup again
In the 5,000 meters for men, victory went to Ted-Jan Bloemen. The Dutchman, riding for Canada, recorded a time of 6.13.87 in Quebec and won a World Cup competition for the first time in six years.
The 37-year-old Bloemen defeated Davide Ghiotto in a direct duel, who came second in 6.17.18. Third place went to the Norwegian Hallgeir Engebraten (6.17.56). Ghiotto secured the overall victory in the rankings with his second place.
The three Dutch participants did not interfere with the top of the results. Marwin Talsma finished ninth in 6.24.33, Marcel Bosker recorded the tenth fastest time (6.24.88) and Jesse Speijers was number thirteen with a time of 6.28.74.
Talsma, Bosker and Speijers still had to secure the third Dutch starting ticket in the 5,000 meters for the World All-round Championships in Quebec. They have achieved this with their final position in the World Cup rankings. Bosker can participate.
Patrick Roest, who had won the four other World Cups in the 5,000 meters this season, was missing in Quebec. The reigning world champion preferred to train on the way to the World Championship distances in Calgary. Ghiotto took advantage of this with the overall victory.
