Roger Federer’s Company Faces Serious Rip-Off Allegations Over Running Shoe Prices

In Switzerland, Roger Federer (42) is a folk hero. However, the tennis legend is currently facing serious rip-off allegations. It’s about running shoes from the On brand. Federer is not only the face of advertising, the 20-time Grand Slam winner also owns shares in the company. The Swiss consumer magazine “K Tipp” has now taken a closer look at the company.

Accordingly, On – like other manufacturers – produces in the low-wage country of Vietnam. The magazine discloses the pricing policy of the Federer company with reference to “confidential customs data”. An example: The Roger Advantage sneaker is purchased in the Far East for 17.86 francs (19 euros). In Switzerland, On charges more than ten times as much, namely 190 francs (200 euros)*.

“K Tipp” compared other shoes and their prices, including models from the German sports brands Adidas and Puma. In detail:

▶ The Cloudsurfer running shoe from On costs 220 francs (232 euros) and costs 19.76 francs (21 euros) to produce.

▶ The Adidas Ultraboost DNA 5.0 is sold in Switzerland for 140 francs (148 euros), while it costs 28.42 francs (30 euros) to purchase.

▶ The Magnify Nitro SP from Puma is available for 111.90 francs (118 euros), in Vietnam it is 30.56 francs (32 euros).

And this is the “K Tipp” conclusion for Roger Federer’s company: “On pays the manufacturer the least and demands the most from the customers.” The magazine also criticizes the quality of the products. A retailer is quoted as saying: “On shoes are classic disposable products.”

There is also criticism from the respected newspapers “Neue Zürcher Zeitung” and “Le Monde”. The French daily accuses the former tennis star (estimated fortune 400 million euros) of “unusual financial greed”.

The “NZZ” quotes from On’s sustainability report. It states that the company is concerned with “promoting equality – wherever we work” and “the future of our planet”. Devastating verdict from the “NZZ”: “It’s of little use to emphasize noble values, human rights and social impact if the Vietnamese seamstress doesn’t feel any of it.”

*Seven models from the Roger series are available in the German shop, costing between 149.95 and 199.95 euros. “K Tipp” writes: “On shoes can be bought cheaper in foreign online shops.” A company spokeswoman explains this with higher costs in Switzerland.
