Real Madrid Tops UEFA’s European Club Finance and Investment Report

First it was Deloitte and now it is UEFA that elevates Real Madrid. The European Club Finance and Investment Landscape Report, published today Thursday by UEFA, places the entity chaired by Florentino Pérez as the club with the most income in European football in the 2022-2023 season. UEFA estimates Madrid’s income last season at €841 million (the figure reported by the club’s official accounting raised it slightly, to €843 million). They thus surpass Manchester City, who, despite being European champions, were behind the whites in economic performance. The skyblue club earned 836 million euros. Only two other teams exceed 800 million in revenue: they are Barça (€815 million) and PSG (€807 million).

In total, the 132 clubs analyzed by UEFA saw their income grow by 13%. The Premier is the league that includes the most teams in the ranking prepared by UEFA: Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle, West Ham and Brighton, in addition to City. The power of the English competition was evident in its total income as a league, estimated in this case at 6.5 billion euros. A business volume that equals what LaLiga (€3,300 M) and the Bundesliga (€3,200 M) generate jointly. The value of audiovisual rights makes the difference: 18 of the 20 clubs that earned the most from television are from the Premier. Only Madrid (10th) and Barça (15th) are among the English clubs.

The UEFA report also highlights Madrid’s efforts to contain spending to guarantee the club’s sustainability. Although it is first in income, the white club is fifth in salaries. The entity paid its players 320 million euros last season, 31% less than the previous year, in which Ancelotti’s team had won the Champions League double. The salaries of the white team represent 38% of the club’s income. The team that spends the most money on player salaries is PSG, with €529 million, followed by Barcelona (€505 million), Manchester City (€389 million) and Chelsea.

Second report that praises Madrid

A recent study by Deloitte (the Football Money League report prepared annually by the consulting firm) also placed Madrid as the club with the most income in European football. Their methodology, however, lowered the whites’ income level to 831.4 million euros. Deloitte kept Manchester City second in the ranking (€825.9 M), but, unlike UEFA, placed PSG in third place (€801.8 M) to the detriment of Barcelona (€800.1 M).

UEFA also published last week the final distribution of revenue for the 2022-2023 Champions League. Madrid, semi-finalist of the competition, was the second team that earned the most money for its participation, behind Manchester City. The white club earned 118.8 million euros, while the champion reached 135 million euros.

Inter, despite being a finalist, was only fifth in earnings, with 101.3 million euros. Bayern (€108.2 M), quarterfinalists, and PSG (€101.3 M), who fell in the round of 16, earned more than the Nerazzurri due to the portion distributed by historical results and the last decade and the higher collection by market pool of Germans and French.
