Bayern candidate? “It is completely underestimated”

Mario Basler names a surprising name as a possible Tuchel successor at FC Bayern. He also talks about Toni Kroos’ return to the DFB team.

Xabi Alonso, Zinedine Zidane or a return of Julian Nagelsmann? There are currently many names that are associated with the coaching job at FC Bayern Munich.

In his podcast “Basler shoots”, SPORT1 expert Mario Basler mentions another, quite surprising name: “I would get a coach like Ralph Hasenhüttl. That would be a coach who showed it in England and did a good job in Leipzig. I would just like to have a coach like that.”

The former Bayern star continued: “With Alonso, I don’t know whether he’s doing himself a favor by going to Munich or Liverpool. I would think about a Ralph Hasenhüttl like that, because I just think that Ralph is completely underestimated. He’s been there for a long time and also performed well in England. And above all, in Ralph Hasenhüttl you have a coach who doesn’t get a lot of pressure from outside,” said the 55-year-old.

Coaches like Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann had to deal with a lot of pressure from day one. This would not be the case with Hasenhüttl, as he is “not overly known all over the world”. Basler believes “that it can work”.

Kroos’ return as an indictment?

In addition to Tuchel’s departure in the summer, Toni Kroo’s return to the national team was the topic that occupied the football world last week. Basler also has a clear opinion here: “We don’t need to talk about the footballing skills that Toni Kroos still has at the moment. First and foremost, you have to say very clearly that this is an indictment for every midfielder who is currently playing for the national team. So Kimmich, Gündogan, Goretzka and also Can.”

The expert believes that the 34-year-old is not necessarily doing himself a favor with the comeback, as he is now seen as a “great savior” and will be hunted down “by one or two journalists” in the event of a possible failure.

Basler also wants Nagelsmann to not only rely on older players at the European Championships: “But I don’t hope that we end up playing with an over-35 player at the European Championships if Hummels or Thomas Müller are also there. I see that as a big problem when you have three players who are of a certain age. Hummels hasn’t played in Dortmund for a long time now, but he’s allowed to help out every now and then. When everyone is there, he sits on the bench. Time is over for Thomas Müller. It can work for Toni Kroos, but it can also totally work against Toni Kroos.”

“This is the last season for Terzic”

There’s a lot going on against BVB at the moment – it’s clear to Basler that there has to be a change in the coaching position by the summer at the latest: “What else do you want to say about Terzic? I think this is the last season for Terzic. That won’t continue after the season. And I don’t know what will happen if you lose at Union Berlin at the weekend, then fourth place is in serious jeopardy.”

He could “also well imagine that the separation would be completed beforehand in Dortmund. I’m not sure that Terzic will work as a coach until the end of this round. It is possible that he will have to leave early. But in my opinion, after the season at the latest, there will be zero discussion for me. The team is simply not performing. I see a great danger in Dortmund,” said the 55-year-old.
