ÖFB Cup: Leoben throws out third Bundesliga team

Salzburg and Sturm Graz had already made it into the last four on Friday, and the last semi-finalist will be determined on Sunday at Rapid – SKN St. Pölten. Meanwhile, the Altach team missed their first participation in the cup semi-finals.

The game started very badly for the guests. A corner from Leoben could not be cleared decisively, Julian Turi brought the ball sharply to the middle and Alar was in the right place.

Alar puts Leoben in the lead

Deni Alar gave Leoben a 1-0 lead against Altach in the tenth minute in the ÖFB Cup quarter-finals.

Difficult place conditions

Altach’s answer came a quarter of an hour later. Mike Bähre sent a corner towards the far corner, where the Leoben defense forgot about Reiner, and the defender was able to head in from close range unchallenged. As a result, a game without any major highlights developed in extremely difficult pitch conditions.

Reiner scores to equalize 1:1

Altach player Constantin Reiner scored in the 25th minute to equalize 1-1 against Leoben in the ÖFB Cup quarter-finals.

Alar with the double pack

After the break, Altach coach Joachim Standfest, a native of Leoben, brought in a second striker, Gustavo Santos. Altach became stronger, but Vesel Demaku did not have more than one chance, which was thwarted by Leoben keeper Florian Wiegele.

When everything seemed to be headed for extra time, Alar struck for the second time. The striker was allowed to get the ball unchallenged in the opposing penalty area and shot it unstoppably into the far corner.

Alar shoots Leoben into the semi-finals

Deni Alar scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute in the ÖFB Cup quarter-finals. Leoben won against Altach 2-1.

Voices about the game:

Rene Poms (Leoben coach): “The joy is huge. Of course there was a bit of luck involved, but in the end it was well deserved. Now we want a home game in the semi-finals.”

Deni Alar (Leoben double goalscorer): “It was a real cup fight. You could see what a great group we are. We are now in the semi-finals, the cup has its own rules, anything is possible. I believe we can achieve great things.”

Luke Hunter (Altach captain): “It was incredibly difficult on the terrain, but the conditions were the same for both. The people of Leoben managed to pull off the lucky punch.”
