Max Eberl should start as FC Bayern’s new sports director on March 1st at the latest. There is a lot to do for the former Leipzig boss.

Munich – Sooner rather than later, Max Eberl should take up his new position as FC Bayern’s sports director. At the supervisory board meeting on February 26th, the 50-year-old will be appointed to the powerful committee of the German record champions. Originally, Eberl was supposed to take up his new role on April 1st, but due to the explosive sporting situation on Säbener Strasse, Eberl is now getting off to a lightning start.

It should start on March 1st at the latest, possibly even in February. The ulterior motive is obvious: Eberl should draw attention to himself – and away from coach Thomas Tuchel and the team. Not the only mammoth task that awaits the new man.

Probably from April 1st: Big task list for Eberl at FC Bayern

Restructure squad: From defeat to defeat – and there have been three of them in the last six games – the voices within the club for a radical change are increasing. Tenor: The team needs a new, title-hungry face. Many supposed top performers such as Leon Goretzka or Serge Gnabry extended their contracts for expensive money after the triple win in 2020, but fell far short of the club’s demands.

Therefore, Eberl has to make tough decisions in close consultation with sports director Christoph Freund: Which players from the current team does he trust to help the German record champions regain their old desire for the title? In addition, the new sports director is following tz-Information urged to adjust the lavish salary structure from previous years.

Or to put it another way: Eberl should save wage costs! The first “victims” of this austerity could be Alphonso Davies and Leroy Sané, whose contracts expire in the summer of 2025. In any case, the new strong man doesn’t have much time to make a decision (extend or sell?) – otherwise the duo would risk leaving without a transfer.

Football expert Eberl also brings sporting expertise

Improve external image: As CEO, Jan-Christan Dreesen has a reputation for understanding players. Nevertheless, the chairman of the board does not have a classic footballing past and holds back when it comes to sporting questions. In this context, he likes to refer to coach Thomas Tuchel or sports director Freund.

Even after the bankruptcy in Leverkusen, Dreesen struggled tz-Information about whether he should speak publicly in the mixed zone or not. Eberl is bringing football expertise back to the board, which will only have three members in the future, with the two bankers Dreesen and Dr. Michael Diederich – and will not shy away from any sporting questions.

    Team manager Krüger criticized internally

Better mood in the cabin: There’s a rumbling in the FCB dressing room – and it’s starting to wear on tz-Information also to do with Kathleen Krüger. The once popular team manager is now said to be in a difficult position with many players and staff members. The accusation: Krüger shields the team too much and adopts an inappropriate commanding tone towards employees and the team.

Krüger’s internal behavior is also said to have been a reason why Bastian Wernscheid left team management and instead took up his new position as “Sports Officer” alongside sports director Freund.

Another example: When Sané was late for the bus departure for the away game in Mönchengladbach last season, he had to drive himself to the airfield in Oberpfaffenhofen – because Krüger allegedly no longer tolerated the player’s tardiness and was making an example of him wanted.

    Eberl should produce talent

Revise youth strategy: The people of Munich have been looking for the key to success in the youth sector for years. There are currently concerns on campus that people are trying too hard to copy RB Salzburg’s youth model.

This is reflected in the influence of former Salzburg employees and the newly founded “Red & Gold Football” joint venture with the US club Los Angeles Football Club and the partner clubs Grasshoppers Zurich (Switzerland), Wacker Innsbruck (Austria), Racing de Montevideo (Uruguay) and Gambinos Stars (Gambia) close.

There is even a rumor doing the rounds on Ingolstadter Strasse that the Bayern Amateurs Regional League team could be deregistered in the near future. After tz-Information, this speculation in the executive suite is currently relegated to the realm of fables. Manuel Bonke, Philipp Kessler
