Football fans: Police check 620 HSV fans on a regional train

A large police force stopped a regional train carrying hundreds of Hamburger SV football fans during the night and searched it for hours. According to a federal police spokesman, around 620 people were checked at Hamburg-Bergedorf train station.

Around 400 officers from the Federal Police and the Hamburg State Police Directorate were looking for suspected violent perpetrators who are said to have clashed with Borussia Dortmund supporters in September last year. In addition, on Saturday evening after HSV’s second division game in Rostock (2:2) there were also “physical attacks” in the form of throwing bottles at the main train station there, the police said.

The raid on the train on which the fans were traveling from Rostock to Hamburg reportedly began shortly after 8 p.m. and lasted until 2:30 a.m. Many fans had to wait on the train until they were checked. The campaign resulted in numerous delays in regional transport, as Deutsche Bahn wrote on X.

Search for 60 violent fans

In total, the police were looking for 60 people who are said to have taken part in a riot on September 16, 2023 and who have not yet been identified, said Jan Müller, head of the Hamburg Federal Police Inspectorate. At that time, HSV and BVB fans attacked each other in the Mannheim train station and there were injuries on both sides.

During the operation on Saturday evening, the police were able to identify at least 15 of the 60 people wanted, said Müller, referring to a preliminary evaluation. There were no arrests and all fans were able to continue traveling after their personal details had been checked.
