NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Addresses Concerns About Defensive Play in the League

Some weeks ago, Joe Dumars, head of basketball operations of the NBA, had commented on the sensational offensive performances by various stars of the League which are now recorded almost with a certain ease. The former Detroit star doesn’t seem concerned about this trend and Adam Silver is of the same opinion. The NBA commissioner responded to the league’s detractors who ‘accuse’ the various teams of now being less attentive in the defensive phase, leaving too much space and freedom to the attackers:

“I want to dispel the idea that the league or management necessarily thinks high-scoring games are better in absolute terms. I think what we want are balanced and competitive games. I don’t agree with those who think that teams don’t defend anymore. The defensive intensity is there. Defenders have to cover much greater distances than in the past. I am satisfied with the current level of play. That being said, I know that some coaches feel that we have somewhat hindered the players’ ability to defend compared to how we played in the past. This is partly intentional. There was a time when we thought the game was too physical and that we had taken away a certain aesthetic beauty from the game, in the 90s I was one of those who thought so.”
