Murray hints at retirement at the end of the season

Andy Murray hinted that he could be in his final season after his 4:6 7:6 (7/5) 6:3 opening win in Dubai on Monday against Canadian Denis Shapovalov. The Scot celebrated his 500th victory on hard court against Shapovalov. Only Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal have previously achieved this on this surface.

“Obviously hard has always been a good surface for me, and 500 is a lot of matches, so I’m very proud of that,” Murray said. The former world number one, three-time major and two-time Olympic champion downplayed a comment he made on the pitch last week (“This game is no longer for me”), but did hint at a possible end to his career.

“People interpret a lot into what I say on the court. I still love the game and the competition,” he explained, but added: “I probably don’t have that long left, but I will do the best I can in these last few months.”
