Controversial Video Surfaces of Werder Bremen’s Marco Grüll and Rapid Wien Players Shouting Homophobic Fan Chants

The Austrian striker Marco Grüll (25) is Werder Bremen’s first summer signing and has already signed until 2027. He continues to celebrate success with his current club, SK Rapid Wien. Like the derby win on Sunday against FK Austria Wien (3-0).

But this is now being overshadowed by a video circulating online.

Shouting with homophobic fan chants

After the game there was a celebration with Rapid fans. There were also ex-St Pauli star Guido Burgstaller, who appeared as lead singer with a megaphone together with assistant coach Stefan Kulovits. Next to it, clearly visible in the video: striker Grüll.

It started with insults against the FK district. “Favoriten is the largest Hurns district”. Then it got really tasteless.

The fans, players and coach, shouted: “We are not poor violets”. Violets mean the purple opponents. The homophobic chants were filmed and then shared on the “X” platform.

SK managing director Steffen Hoffmann had to apologize on Monday for insulting the Austrians as “assholes” using a megaphone. His words were not intended for the public and “despite all the rivalry, that was and is not appropriate.”

The Austrian Bundesliga club published a statement on Tuesday in which captain Burgstaller, on behalf of the players involved, apologized for the derailments.
