Monza Milan, Pioli: ‘Heavy mistakes, defeat that hurts’

Too many mistakes, maybe even too many you change. Because it is inevitable that, among the reflections that Milan will have to make after the bad defeat on the Monza pitch, there is also that relating to the formation deployed by Pioli changing 6 out of 10 outfield players compared to those who had won 3-0 against Rennes just a few days ago. Revolutionized attack, in particular (Okafor, Chukwueze and Jovic all from 1′), with the introductions of Giroud e Pulisic in the second half which then led to the goals of the provisional 2-2. “These are the classic post-match discussions”, says Pioli, a little annoyed in the press conference at the end of the match. “We played with the same midfield that beat Napoli and the same defense apart from Kjaer who was tired. Thiaw was fine and he could play from the start. The fact that he then made a mistake (the penalty awarded, ed.) is not a question of him not being well or not being able to play from the start.”

Because Leao, Giroud and Pulisic didn’t play from the start

“Pulisic and Giroud were tired and had to catch their breath,” continues Pioli. “Leao was supposed to startthen in the morning he stopped finishing and said he didn’t feel like playing from the start due to a calf problem. Pulisic, however, didn’t train yesterday because he was tired. It was right to make him catch his breath from the start, in his career he has never played as much as he did this year.” Then he points the finger at too many mistakes. “We conceded errors that jeopardized the match. We did the first half hour as we should, the numerical inferiority put us in difficulty, then it was 2-2 we were not clear and we even wanted to win it. Evening in which we made too many mistakes: both Thiaw’s and Jovic’s are heavy mistakes”. Finally, the comment on the ranking after the failure to overtake Juventus: “Third place is not yet so solid and second is not so far away”
