MLB Star Justin Turner Expresses Frustration Over Talent Still Without Contracts

New Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter Justin Turner is concerned that several talented free agents are still out of work just days before the start of spring camps.

“It’s just frustrating,” he said Monday, his comments reported by the Sportsnet network.

“It’s upsetting for the guys who make up this free agent market. It’s also infuriating for many teams around the league who are trying to figure out where some of these guys are going to go. It’s a bit of a black eye for baseball.”

“There are all these guys who got invitations to the All-Star Game, Cy Young Trophy winners, hitting champions and rookies of the year. They all have difficulty finding work. I don’t think that’s a good sign,” Turner added.

Among the players still without a major league contract are Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery and Michael Lorenzen. These are athletes who have all obtained individual honors in recent years.

For his part, Turner signed a one-year contract, worth $13 million, with the Blue Jays at the beginning of February. The 39-year-old veteran and his new teammates are currently in Dunedin, Florida, for their spring camp. The Queen City club will play its first preparatory game on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies.
