Missed Opportunities and Misery: BVB’s Disappointing Performance Against Heidenheim

“Expected goals value was two” “Horrible” missed opportunity obscures BVB misery

Borussia Dortmund remains unbeaten in 2024, but the performance against newly promoted Heidenheim is disappointing. While Frank Schmidt can joke about Kleindienst’s missed opportunity, Edin Terzic is setting an example at BVB with his clear criticism.

Tim Kleindienst almost made it. The striker from 1. FC Heidenheim almost gave Borussia Dortmund their first goal of the year. Nobody has managed that in 2024 – apart from Nico Schlotterbeck, who scored the completely botched own goal in the 3-1 win against VfL Bochum. But Kleindienst didn’t take advantage of his chance in the 14th minute, even though he got the ball 13 meters from the goal after a bad pass from Salih Özcan – and the goal was largely empty because Alexander Meyer was at the left post. A miss for the history books. One who saved the weak, lackluster BVB from a 0-0 draw.

“That was a huge opportunity,” said his coach Frank Schmidt at DAZN and joked: “The expected goals value for the chance was probably two and not one.” Kleindienst himself found the scene unpleasant after the final whistle: “To miss an opportunity like that is very, very hard,” said the 28-year-old. “It was harder to miss than to put it in.”

Because he missed – and his teammate Stefan Schimmer also missed the ball just before the goal line in stoppage time – BVB remained unbeaten for the sixth time in a row. The fact that the Champions League aspirant has to settle for a point is of course no consolation for the striker from newly promoted Heidenheim: “From my personal point of view, this opportunity will hang with me for a day or two,” explained Kleindienst: “That’s horrible “To see something like that.”

Horrible, BVB coach Edin Terzic didn’t use this word, but he still criticized his team harshly: “We didn’t play a good game. With the performance we showed, we didn’t deserve more than this one point. ” He explained to DAZN: “We had a lot of possession, but had no penetration, couldn’t develop any force and had no chances to score. We were far too complicated, didn’t play cleanly and had big problems with the pitch.”

Terzic criticizes substitute players

However, he didn’t want to speak of a setback: “It was a step that was more lateral.” Sports director Sebastian Kehl even viewed the draw as “a small step forward”. Kehl found that the runner-up did not develop enough power, but improved as the game progressed. A judgment that was probably also due to the numerous absences of regular employees. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, Julian Brandt, Marco Reus and Jadon Sancho were missing in addition to the numerous long-term injuries. “If you have to replace nine people, then of course it’s a bloodletting,” said Kehl. “In the end you can’t compensate for that, no team can do that. However, that’s not the only reason why we’re drawing here.”

But Terzic didn’t want to accept that: “We still had a decent team on the pitch.” However, the entire team “did not manage to implement what we had set out to do,” said the coach, also criticizing the players from the second row. “Today a few guys got a chance who had been dissatisfied in the last few weeks and months – and that was clearly not enough.”

According to Terzic, BVB is assuming that Sancho and Co. “will be available again at the beginning of next week”. The quartet should therefore also be an option for the home game on Friday evening (8.30 p.m./DAZN and in the ntv.de live ticker) against SC Freiburg. That’s probably why BVB “doesn’t have to fall into a complete depression again just because we draw once,” emphasized striker Niclas Füllkrug and added: “It’s going to continue.”
