Raonic trailed 7-6 (4), 1-1 when he left the match, having won his serve in the second set.

The 33-year-old Raonic returned to the ATP Tour last year after a prolonged absence due to injury.

The former world number 3 was looking to qualify for his first semi-final since the Paris Open in 2020.

Raonic, who arrived in Rotterdam ranked 309th in the world, showed some of his peak form against Sinner, the fourth racket in the world.

The Ontarian scored 11 aces against Sinner before withdrawing from the match.

In the other quarter-finals, Tallon Griekspoor, Alex de Minaur and Grigor Dimitrov won their respective duels.

De Minaur defeated second seed Andrey Rublev in three sets of 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3, despite his 49% first serves in play. Griekspoor eliminated Emil Ruusuvuori 7-5, 7 -6 (4) and Dimitrov defeated Alexander Shevchenko 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4.

In the semi-finals, Sinner will play against Griekspoor, while Dimitrov will cross swords with de Minaur.
