Mauritian Badminton Team Makes A Strong Comeback in African Championships

The Kate Foo Kune/Kobita Dookhee tandem won their match against the Algerians.

The two Mauritian selections found themselves in the heat of action during the first two days spent in Cairo, Egypt for the group stage of the team tournament. The competition quickly saw the favorites of each table emerge. If the fate of the girls was almost no longer in their hands, the boys still have a chance of reaching the last four.

Having fallen into group B, the group of death, the Mauritian team got off to a tough start. Opposed to Nigeria in their first match, Vishal Sawaram’s protégés put up a good duel but still lost with a score of 3-2. If all the other meetings were played at a very high level, the one between Julien Paul and Anu Opeyori kept all its promises. The two badists, captains of their respective selections and contenders for the title of African champion, had to decide after 57 minutes of play.

Julien Paul will have the task of leading the men’s team to victory against South Africa.

A final before the grand final where the Nigerian, as in the previous edition, emerged victorious after three sets (21-17, 13-21, 21-17). Julien Paul, however, made up for it in the doubles alongside Alexandre Bongout. Indeed, the Mauritian duo hit hard by winning over the pair Godwin Olofua/Anu Opeyori in three sets (15-21, 21-10, 21-15). Note that the Nigerian pair represented Africa in the men’s doubles during the last Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Cameroon fell 5-0 yesterday afternoon, the Mauritians still have a chance to qualify for the semi-finals. To do this, they will have to overcome South Africa to ensure they finish in second place in Group B. In case of victory, they should find either Egypt or Algeria, two nations which are will face off earlier today for first place in Group A.

On the girls’ side, despite a good start to the competition with a 5-0 victory over Cameroon, the Mauritian badists put their backs against the wall by losing to Algeria with a score of 3-2. Kate Foo Kune’s experience was decisive since she won her singles against Tanina Violette Mammeri (21-13, 21-17) as well as her doubles alongside Kobita. They won against the Yasmina Chibah/Linda Mazri tandem in three sets (18-21, 21-7, 21-12).

With Algeria’s victory over Cameroon (5-0), the Mauritians had to win by at least two matches ahead of South Africa to be able to hope to finish among the first two places in group A .
