Guardiola also answered the follow-up question as to whether he already had a specific national team in mind: “I don’t know: who would want me? In order to work for a national team, you have to be wanted, just like at a club.”

Guardiola reiterated that he would not necessarily set himself the goal of winning the big tournament. “I’ve never thought about it that way,” he said. “When I started coaching I wasn’t thinking about winning the league or winning the Champions League. I just thought ‘Now I have a job’,” he added.

Guardiola has won 37 titles with his teams so far. This puts him in the ranking of the most successful coaches in second place, behind Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson, who was able to lift a trophy or bowl 49 times.
