SC Freiburg is losing a long-time employee in the summer: assistant coach Patrick Baier is quitting after 25 years in Breisgau.

Patrick Baier started at SC Freiburg before the turn of the millennium. From 1999 he worked at the Freiburg football school, and since 2009 Baier has been a member of the professional coaching team. The now 56-year-old worked with the professionals under Robin Dutt, Marcus Sorg and now for twelve years under Christian Streich.
Baier originally worked as an architect, but admitted to himself early on: “I’m a better trainer than an architect.” That’s why he concentrated fully on his job at the sports club. The licensed soccer teacher is primarily responsible for opponent analysis in Freiburg.
“I would like to take a self-determined step aside to look at football from a different perspective,” Baier is quoted on the Freiburg website: “After 25 years in an extremely driven business without the opportunity to reflect, it’s my turn the time to pause.”
Baier already senses how difficult it will be to “leave such a privileged job.” But above all he feels “great gratitude to have been part of the development of our club.” No current assistant coach in the German upper house has more Bundesliga years in a row.
Saier: “We regret, but of course respect his wish”
“Patrick Baier has noticeably influenced the sporting development of SC Freiburg over the past 25 years in his various functions and has also done very valuable work as an assistant coach for the professionals,” explains board member Jochen Saier, who is not happy to let Baier go: “We regret , but of course respect his wish to reorient himself after this season.”
The sports club was helped by the fact that Baier “informed the club early about his decision”. “We can make new personnel decisions in advance,” says Saier: “Until then, we are pleased that Patrick will use all his expertise and meticulousness to help our team continue to have a successful season.”
There are still 13 Bundesliga games left to say goodbye to the big stage. Another European highlight awaits on Thursday (9 p.m., LIVE! on kicker) with the Europa League away game at RC Lens.
