Latvian School Winter Festival: Jelgava 4th Secondary School takes top honors in 13-sport competition

With more than a thousand participants, 120 schools competing, the Latvian School Winter Festival was held last weekend. Competing in 13 sports, Jelgava 4th secondary school showed the best result in the overall results, Sigulda State Gymnasium took second place and Madona State Gymnasium took third place.

Participants of the winter festival competed in biathlon, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, snowboarding, freestyle snowboarding, 3×3 hockey, ice skating, sledding, winter ski orientation, freestyle skiing, winter volleyball, disc golf and table hockey.

The most popular sports at the Winter Festival this year were: cross-country skiing – with 242 participants, sledding – with 234 participants, snow volleyball – with 221 participants, followed by alpine skiing – with 177 participants. 123 participants competed in winter orienteering on skis, 71 participants each in biathlon and snowboarding, 64 participants in ice hockey 3×3, 58 participants in table hockey, 42 participants in disc golf, 42 participants in ice skating, 40 participants in ice skating, freestyle skiing and snowboarding – 27 participants.

Summing up the medals won, the three best schools won: Jelgava 4th secondary school – 4 gold, 1 silver medal, Sigulda State Gymnasium – 3 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze medals, while Madona State Gymnasium – 3 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals. In the honorable fourth place – Alūksne secondary school with 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.

LSFP General Secretary Artūrs Balodis-Rozītis: “Despite the spirit of the competition and the list of medals, the aim of the Winter Festival is to give everyone the opportunity to try different types of winter sports even without previous experience, so the main emphasis at the festival was on active participation, trying new sports in order to return home with positive emotions, which would serve as an inspiration for further sports activities, as well as good results in studies.”

“The participation of schools and the significant number of students this year also confirm that a youth sports event of this format is necessary in winter conditions,” admits Ronalds Režais, coordinator of the Latvian Schools Winter Festival. “Even though the weather at the last moment created obstacles for some sports, with the help of the employees and volunteers involved in the Eagles, as well as with the responsiveness of the teachers and judges, a solution was found to allow the students to hold exciting competitions. I wish the schools and students to continue to be as active and play sports as possible year!”

Sigulda State Gymnasium – 77 students, Sigulda City High School – 57 students, Jelgava 4th High School and Riga State German Gymnasium – 45 students from each, hosts – Eagle High School (44 students) applied for the competition.

The Winter Festival of Latvian Schools ended with a torchlight procession from Eagle Secondary School to the Eagle Hall, where the award ceremony took place. Olympian and biathlete Gundars Upenieks, as well as former World and European champion in table hockey Edgars Caics, greeted the award winners.
