Johan Derksen thinks it is wise that Ajax has attempted to bring Marc Overmars back to the club. The policy man stepped down as director of football affairs in February 2022 due to inappropriate behavior towards female colleagues. On Friday, NOS revealed that Overmars, currently technical director at Royal Antwerp FC, has been approached twice about returning, but has declined both times.

“I think it is very big news and very sensible of Ajax. They should have been patient with Overmars. It is purely about money, because it is a listed company,” Derksen said on Friday evening during the Today Inside program. Hélène Hendriks interrupted him and came up with a different opinion: “That’s all fine. But what I find irritating: first you have the moral that Overmars has to go. Then they suddenly think about the money and he can go back. What is that all about? What are your values then?”

René van der Gijp also does not think that Overmars would be wise to return to the Johan Cruijff ArenA. “He shouldn’t do it anymore. Do you know what it is? He had Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt and Donny van de Beek. He brought in Daley Blind, Dusan Tadic, Sébastien Haller and Hakim Ziyech,” the former professional sums up. “Of course Erik ten Hag did well, but they also had a great team, including Noussair Mazraoui. Overmars must cherish that. He just has to move on.”

Overmars himself told the NOS that he was not thinking about a return to Amsterdam for the time being. “I think if I had pushed through and said that I was open to it, things would have been set in motion. But I want to stay at Antwerp FC. I really enjoy it here,” said the technical director of Royal Antwerp, with which he became national champion for the first time in club history last season.
