Japan (ranked 3rd in the world) won the first match by surprise. Aruna, ranked 12th in the world and the ace of Nigeria (ranked 18th), withdrew due to poor health.

On the same day, Aruna revealed on her Instagram that she had food poisoning.

By making it to the final eight of this tournament, Japan will earn a spot (three spots, including two singles spots) for the team competition at the Paris Olympics, which will begin in July.

The second match of the first round on the 17th will be against the Czech Republic (28th place).
