Jannik Sinner: The Thorny Path to Tennis Superstardom

Rome/Sexten – Vanity Fair magazine is one of the few media outlets that gave Jannik Sinner a little insight into his life as a tennis superstar. The Sesto native talks about his dream of becoming number one in the ATP world rankings, but he also talks about the thorny path and the sacrifices he had to make to become what he is today.

Jannik Sinner is still happy. He doesn’t regret not living the life of a normal teenager and young man. “I’ve never been to a disco before,” says the Sesto native, who prefers to play cards. He also gave the interviewer a very small insight into his private life. “Real love doesn’t distract: the best tennis players all have wives and children,” says the Sesto native.

Jannik Sinner’s tennis year 2024 began as wonderfully as his professional year 2023 had ended. The historic triumph at the Australian Open was followed by victory at the tournament in Rotterdam. The latter success also helped the 22-year-old tennis superstar climb to third place in the ATP world rankings. Jannik Sinner has it in his own hands to overtake the indestructible Novak Djokovic and the exceptional Spanish talent Carlos Alcaraz, who are still ahead of him today, and become number one in the world.

It’s hardly surprising that the first question is about this dream. “The future cannot be predicted. It’s definitely a dream. We are working hard to get as close to him as possible,” said the Sesto native about his ambition.

At the same time, the 22-year-old notes that being able to overcome difficult moments is part of the life of a tennis professional. “All the games you win, you don’t win them the day you play them. You win them by preparing for these games for months, maybe even years,” emphasizes Jannik Sinner. “We will have to see whether this work will also be useful in the first defeat. But I’m not afraid of failure. I don’t see any point in thinking about it either,” explains the Sesto native.

Jannik, who is considered very modest despite his fame, almost avoids the question of whether he could be a role model or even an idol for a twelve-year-old. “Maybe yes, because I know that I treat everyone equally. “No matter whether I’m facing number one in the world rankings or the person cleaning the locker room, I always behave politely,” says Jannik Sinner.

Sinner’s tax residence in Monte Carlo is also discussed in the interview. “The principality is a very safe place. There are perfect courts, beautiful sports facilities and lots of tennis players with whom I can train. I always thought it was a good place to live,” says Jannik Sinner.

As is to be expected in Italy, Jannik Sinner is also asked whether he feels 100 percent Italian. “Always, and I’m very proud of it. When I was seven years old, I took part in the ski championships with Italian children. When I played in Liguria at the age of 14, all of my sports mates were Italian. “At my house we speak our German dialect, but in Sicily they also speak a dialect that they don’t understand in other parts of Italy, right?” says the Sesto native.

After long weeks in which he traveled from tournament to tournament and trained for hours on tennis courts, Jannik Sinner returned to Sexten to visit his loved ones – especially his grandparents. During the days that the tennis superstar spends in his home valley, he wishes not to be disturbed. “I want to protect the people who are closest to me and keep them out of the whole thing,” affirms the Sesto native.

When the Vanity Fair interviewer asks Jannik how difficult it was for him to pursue a tennis career as a teenager, he receives an answer that says a lot about the Sextner’s strong character. “I have everything, I’m not missing anything. I’ve never been to a disco, I don’t like going to bed late. I prefer playing cards with a friend. I don’t have many friends, but the ones I do have are real. They have known me since I was a child and they don’t care what I won or how famous I am today. The people who are close to me think the same way I do. “We understand each other at a glance,” explains the Sesto native. But Jannik Sinner is not shy. Those who know him well describe Jannik as an extroverted young man who sometimes surprises those around him with a quick-witted answer.

When asked about his cancellation of the Sanremo festival, Jannik has an answer that couldn’t be clearer. “I answer 99 percent of the requests with no. The reason is very simple: I want to concentrate on tennis and therefore try to avoid distractions,” said the Sesto native.

The journalist asks Jannik Sinner, of all people, whether love is one of the distractions. In contrast to many other sports greats, he is known for not celebrating his private life on social networks. “I want my private life to remain private,” says Jannik, but he lets it be known that love is one of the distractions that takes some of the hardship out of his professional life.

“I think it’s a beautiful thing when you find the right love. The best tennis players in the world all have wives and children,” emphasizes Jannik, who is probably in these beautiful moments longs for Maria Bracciniwith whom he has been in a relationship for a long time.
