Jan Thielmann is currently the face of 1. FC Köln like no other. After his most recent appearance he almost becomes Poldi-like. The 21-year-old is particularly valuable in the sporting struggle for survival.

When Jan Thielmann talked about scoring goals late on Saturday evening, you felt like you were reminded of better times at 1. FC Köln. A time in the noughties when the Rhenish Bundesliga club’s final weakness was not as blatant as it was this season, and that was also because another, much better-known young professional was regularly showing highlights. We’re talking about Lukas Podolski, who once did a lot of final work for his Effzeh without a care in the world.

Now, after only Cologne’s third win of the current season, the 21-year-old Thielmann was almost Poldi-like when he described his goal to make it 2-0 against Eintracht Frankfurt: “In the eightieth minute, my head went out. I just thought: I’ll hold on to it, he can’t do more than miss.”
