Irish Basketball Players Refuse to Greet Israeli Opponents Out of Protest for Palestinian State Non-Recognition

The non-recognition of the Palestinian State and the war waged by Israel since October 7 are forcing many other countries to position themselves and causing confrontations between them. On this occasion, the Irish players wanted to show their rejection of the genocide that is being committed by refusing to greet their Israeli rivals during the Eurobasket 2025 match played this Thursday.

Before the start of the game, the Irish basketball federation announced that its players would not greet their opponents at any time or carry out the usual exchange of gifts. Finally, they also decided not to get up or go to the center of the field when the Israeli anthem was played. The Jewish Federation, for its part, has described these events as “anti-Semitism.”

The Irish team’s coaching staff released a statement in which they responded to the accusation, calling it “completely wrong”, while stating that they have “fully supported” the decision of their players.

The Sports for Palestine association, for its part, has expressed that the players should not have played that match, although it has applauded the gesture.

It is not the first time that someone from Israel has accused the Irish players of anti-Semitism. In fact, the Israeli player Dor Sa’ar gave an interview that became well known to her State basketball federation, where she referred to her rivals saying that “they are known to be quite anti-Semitic, it is no secret.” .
