Hugo Grenier Narrowly Misses Victory Against Sebastian Korda

Coming from qualifications in Marseille, Hugo Grenier (155th ATP) almost signed the performance of the day, Tuesday, at the AT 250 tournament in Marseille, before narrowly losing (6-3, 2-6, 7-6 [3] in 2h08) against the American Sebastian Korda, who is ahead of him by more than 120 places in the world rankings (34th).

At 27, Grenier, 95th at his best a year and a half ago, had never beaten a member of the top 60… other than Korda. He had in fact dominated the son of Petr (then 28th) last year at the Masters 1000 in Madrid, on clay (7-6 [5]7-6 [7]). Despite this good memory, the Frenchman nevertheless seemed dominated on a regular basis, up to 6-3, 2-1 for Korda. But he then scored twenty of the next twenty-five points, to tie the score at one set all.

Korda will meet Dimitrov on Thursday

The American failed earlier and earlier in the exchange, while his opponent, willing, gave very little. In the third set, Grenier broke from the start and went so far as to lead 4-2 but Korda then tightened the game more, broke at 4-3 and achieved a decisive tie-break more solid than the Frenchman, who finished with three shots in the net.

In the second round, Thursday, Sebastian Korda will face the tournament’s No. 2 seed, Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, 13th player in the world.
