Handing Over the African Cup of Nations: Ivory Coast 2023 to Morocco 2025

The relay between Ivory Coast 2023 and Morocco 2025 was passed on Sunday after the Nigeria-Ivory Coast final, this Sunday in Abidjan.

After Ivory Coast, the African Cup of Nations will land in Morocco in 2025. As tradition dictates, to mark the handover between the two organizing countries, the flag of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) was presented to Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), from the hands of Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, this Sunday, February 11, on the sidelines of the CAN 2023 final, won by the Elephants against Nigeria (2- 1).

Last Friday, during a press conference in Abidjan, CAF president Patrice Motsepe did not give dates for the next African Cup, supposed to be held in Morocco in 2025.

“I’m not going to make an announcement, we’ll do it in due course. My message for the people of Morocco and the people of Africa is that next year’s CAN will be a huge success,” the South African leader announced to the press.

The next African Cup should be played in the summer of 2025 in Morocco, according to the FRMF. “The 35th edition of the CAN (…) will be played in the kingdom during the summer of 2025,” wrote the governing body of Moroccan football in the press release announcing the retention of Walid Regragui.

However, at the same time, the International Federation (Fifa) is organizing its first major Club World Cup with 32 teams, from June 15 to July 13 in the United States.

“I met the president of Fifa (Gianni Infantino) yesterday (at the UEFA congress in Paris, editor’s note), in fact there are a lot of competitions at the same time,” admitted Motsepe.

“We are confident that we will be able to find good dates,” added the CAF president.

The two previous CANs have already been postponed. CAN-2021 was played in January-February 2022 in Cameroon, and the current African Cup, still officially called CAN-2023, began on January 13, 2024 in Ivory Coast.

Furthermore, the qualifications for CAN-2025 have still not started. A preliminary round is scheduled from March 18 to 26 according to the CAF calendar.
