Handball: 19 goals in a single match, Chambery winger Benjamin Richert makes history

Even Mikkel Hansen couldn’t do it. This Saturday evening in Créteil, Chambéry right winger Benjamin Richert broke a record almost 20 years old by scoring 19 goals in the same match, leading the Savoyards to success (39-40) in a match counting for the 16th day of Liqui Moly Starligue. The number 8 of Chambéry SMBH thus erased the mark of Toulouse Anouar Ayed, author of 17 goals against Saint-Raphaël on November 6, 2004. The latter had been equaled by Raphaël Caucheteux, top scorer in the history of the championship, in 2017 .

Author of a great performance, Richert scored 19 goals on 25 shots attempted this Saturday (76% success), including a solid 6/8 from the penalty spot. With eleven goals already scored at half-time, the cousin of French international Laura Flippes had done much of the work towards the record before returning to the locker room. It was two minutes from the end of the match that the 25-year-old winger scored for the 19th time, establishing a historic mark while offering victory to his teammates.

For the moment never selected for the French team, the native of Strasbourg was nevertheless part of the generation crowned double world champion in the youth category, in 2017 and 2019. Often hampered by injuries, Richert had already stood out in Starligue during the 2020-2021 financial year, finishing second best scorer with 183 goals.
