Grant Williams on His Unexpected Move to the Charlotte Hornets: “It’s About Finding Joy and Building Something Special”

The NBA is what it is. Every year many players change teams from one day to the next and on many occasions it is a shock for them. Yes, you know that the rules of the game are like that, but no one prepares you to take a 180 degree turn in your life in a matter of hours.

That’s exactly what happened to Grant Williams. He arrived at the Dallas Mavericks in the summer and seemed like he would be an essential part of the group of players called to surround Luka Doncic and help him win. The reality has been different. Those from Texas have decided to transfer him months later to acquire PJ Washington, a move that has taken the former Celtics player to the Charlotte Hornets. Well, he is really happy with the change.

In statements collected by Shane Connuck of The Charlotte Observer, The power forward explains that having the opportunity to play for the team from the city where he grew up is a motivational boost.

«I always thought this would happen at the end of my career, but it’s kind of funny that it happened this way because it allows you to be part of something that can be built on. You know, new owners, new team, a group of young, talented kids… We have the opportunity to build something special here in the city,” Williams warns.

Despite being born in Houston, Williams’ family moved to Charlotte when he was a child. Already established there, he spent his high school years in Charlotte, right where Seth Curry was also, who accompanied him on his trip from Dallas to North Carolina. Williams admits that feeling of belonging is fantastic.

«We just have Mr. Curry (Dell Curry) back there. This is something that, as a kid, you always wanted. It’s about playing for your hometown team. I always wanted to create something special here. It’s about finding that same joy that you had at that young age,” he concludes.
