Germany’s Katharina Menz and Other Judokas Compete in World Championships: Results and Outlook for Next Rounds

Katharina Menz started the competition in the second round against Anneliese Fielder from Australia in the weight class up to 48 kg, which had 40 participants. After 89 seconds, the 33-year-old German champion made the decision with a diving technique. The round of 16 match against Hyekyeong Lee from South Korea went into golden score overtime. The woman from Württemberg made the decision with a Wazaari rating. In the quarter-finals, Menz had to admit defeat early against World Cup third-place finisher Assunta Scutto from Italy. Masha Ballhaus from TH Eilbeck defeated Angelica Delgado from the USA in the second round of the class up to 52 kg. In the round of 16 she had to admit defeat to Kisumi Omori from Japan by choking after 8:18 minutes in extra time.

Seija Ballhaus from TSV Großhadern won her opening fight in the second round of the class up to 57 kg with two Wazaari scores against Ozlem Yildiz from Turkey. In the round of 16, after a strong endurance performance, she failed in overtime after a total of 12:12 minutes due to Wazaari scoring to Junior World Champion Veronica Toniolo from Italy.

Pauline Starke from the Hannover judo team defeated Maria Escano from Guam in round two of the up to 57 kg class. She then had to admit defeat against Faiza Mokdar from France.

Moritz Plafky from JC Hennef started in the 60 kg class with a victory in the golden score overtime by Wazaari rating for Ko-uchi-maki-komi against Aybek Omirov from Turkmenistan. In the second round, Plafky initially had to accept a Wazaari deficit against Rodrigo Costa Lopes from Portugal. After the equalizer, Hennefer scored the decision in extra time and was thus in the round of 16. Here the 27-year-old German champion lost after 2:45 minutes in a handhold against Yung Wei Yang from Taipei, runner-up at the Tokyo Olympics.

Maximilian Standke from KSC Asahi Spremberg had to admit defeat in the first round with Wazaari scoring against world champion Francisco Garrigos from Spain in the class up to 60 kg.

Martin Setz from UJKC Potsdam beat Samuel Hall from Great Britain in round one of the class up to 66 kg. It went into extra time against Nurali Emomali from Tajikistan. Here Emomali received Hansoku-make. In the round of 16, Brandenburg lost to Narmandakh Bayanmunkh from the United Arab Emirates, third in the Asian Games.

On Saturday the fights continue at the Accor Arena of Bercy with the women’s -63 and -70 kg and the men’s -73 and -81 kg bouts. Starting for the DJB are:
