From Humble Beginnings to Bundesliga Stardom: The Remarkable Journey of Deniz Undav

Today he earns millions, but it wasn’t always like that…

With 13 goals, Deniz Undav (27) is in fourth place on the top scorer list and is sensationally on course for the Champions League with VfB Stuttgart in third place. But things haven’t always gone so well for the striker, who is currently on loan from Brighton.

In SPORT BILD, the offensive man reports on his time as a young player when he completed training to become a machine operator at the age of 19. Undav about his life back then: “I didn’t want to be a financial burden on my parents anymore, so I decided to get an education. So I got 600 euros a month from training and 400 euros from football. That was 1000 euros, around 400 euros went towards the rent. I did it like that for two years.”

Today Undav logically no longer has any money worries. As a professional, how difficult is it for him to maintain a connection to reality? The goalscorer: “The training period was almost a luxury. The year before I had 120 euros available for me per month. My parents paid my rent and I had to pay the train ticket myself. I had to cope with 100 euros every month.”

Undav continues: “It’s a completely different world now, but I still don’t lose touch with money. I remember exactly how hard it was for me to spend two weeks eating nothing but toast and coleslaw because I had no money. Fortunately, I no longer have any financial problems and I try to invest my salary well.”

And what was his plan to get by on 100 euros a month? Undav: “When I ate outside with my teammates, it hurt my wallet. But I didn’t always want to cancel. From the second or third week onwards it was often just toast and coleslaw and occasionally mayonnaise if I had a good month (smiles). I ate some of that for two weeks. At the beginning of the month I always bought three or four cases of water. The deposit bottles were not thrown away, but collected. It went on like that for a year, a year and a half.”

Stuttgart really strong Undav scores, Freiburg kicks and rages!
