Xàtiva Badminton Club Shines with Eight Medals in Two Tournaments

The Xàtiva Badminton Club completed another great weekend and the club’s athletes won a total of eight medals in two tournaments. The player of German origin who plays for the Setabe club, Thomas Wandschneider won a silver and a bronze in the Spanish Paraabadminton International held in Toledo; and the absolute and senior athletes achieved two golds and four silvers in the Ibi Top TTR.

Thomas, who started as one of the favorites in the men’s singles and doubles events, returned to the podium. In individual WH1, the CB Xàtiva athlete passed the group stage achieving first place in the group. In the elimination bracket, Thomas lost in the semifinals against the Korean Lee Sam Seop by 18-21, 21-18 and 21-15, winning the bronze medal. Previously, the player from the Sebastián club beat the Japanese Hiroshi Murayama in the quarterfinals by 21-16 and 22-20. In men’s doubles of the WH1-WH2 category, in which he played alongside his partner Rick Cornell, the couple reached the final, in which They lost to the Koreans Jeong Jaegun and Yu Sooyoung by 21-14 and 21-12, obtaining the silver. In the semifinals, Thomas and Rick beat the Malaysian couple 21-12 and 21-13 and in the quarterfinals they beat a Spanish couple.

With these two medals, Thomas closes a great fortnight of competitions in Spanish lands (in Toledo and Vitoria) in which he has achieved a total of two silvers, a bronze and a fifth place, with which he remains in the top positions of the qualification to compete in the next Paralympic Games.

Badminton Xàtiva added another six medals in the Top TTR tournament for absolute and senior categories, played last Sunday in Ibi. Absolutely, in the men’s doubles, the Setabe couple formed by Vicent Molina and David Polop won the silver after losing in the final against Alberto Ivorra and Pedro Ripoll by 16-21, 21-12 and 23-21. In the semifinals they beat Ginés and Salvador Vallés by 22-20, 25-27 and 23-21. Vicente Ferrer and Julio Martín also competed in this test, who could not make it through the group stage. In women’s doubles, Andrea Orquín partnered with Soraya Gandia, from CB Enguera, and they also won silverafter losing in the final against the experienced couple formed by Ana Ramírez and María Rodríguez, from CB Alicante Intercity.

In the mixed doubles, CB Xàtiva competed with three couples: Mª José Mompó and Julio Martín, who did not make it to the final round; Vicent Molina and Andrea Orquín; and David Polop and Soraya Gandia. These last two couples were placed in the same group and in the direct match between the two, David and Soraya won by 21-17 and 21-15, thus advancing to the final round. After overcoming the quarterfinals and the semifinals, in the final they lost to Miguel Esteve and Inés Costero by 21-17 and 21-15, thus both winning a new silver.

In the senior category, the representation from Sebastián stood out in the men’s individual B1-B2, with three athletes from the club, José Luis Llopis achieving the gold, Vicente Ferrer the silverwhile Daniel Meseguer came fourth. In the women’s individual, Mª José Mompó won the gold by beating Mª Julia Juan in the final, 21-6 and 21-9.

Spanish University Championship

Besides, CB Xàtiva was also represented in the Spanish University Championshipheld from April 23 to 26 in Santander, where the Setabense David Polop was part of the University of Valencia team. David placed fifth in the men’s doubles, which he played alongside Lorenzo Adell, after losing in the quarterfinals against Luis Enrique Peñalver and Jaume Pérez by 21-12 and 21-13. In the team competition, the UV team finished fifth after losing in the quarterfinals against the Universidad Católica de Murcia 3-0. David Polop played the men’s singles event, in which he lost to Luis Enrique Peñalver by 21-14 and 21-16.

Upcoming competitions

The Xàtiva Badminton Club will compete from May 3 to 5 Spanish Senior Championship 2024, which is held in A Estrada (Galicia). The Setabe club will be represented by Julio Martín, Mª José Mompó, Santiago Villanueva and Carlos Martínez, who will participate in at least two tests. CB Xàtiva will also be this Saturday at the Autonomous Master Sub-13 and Sub-17which will take place in El Campello.
