Yasuhiro Hiyama participated in the Senbatsu in the spring of 1985 as the ace of Tochiku, a preparatory school in Fukuoka known for both literary and martial arts. He hung up his uniform after not winning a single match in seven years as a professional, and at the age of 29 he qualified as a judicial scrivener. He is a rare professional baseball alumnus who works as a lawyer.
“It’s been 39 years ago since I was drafted, and over 30 years since I retired.I go to spring training camp and meet with Kintetsu alumni and my mate Masumi Kuwata, but basically I don’t know anything about professional baseball. I’m in a completely unrelated place.”

Kiyohara’s “first place” to Kintetsu
The main characters at the draft meeting held on November 20, 1985 were the two players from PL Gakuen, who won the championship at Koshien that summer: ace Masumi Kuwata and No. 4 batter Kazuhiro Kiyohara. That fall, the Yomiuri Giants selected Kuwata, who had announced his intention to attend Waseda University, with the first pick, and the Seibu Lions picked Kiyohara, who was nominated by six teams, through a lottery. During the “KK Draft Incident”, Hiyama was the one who quietly joined the Kintetsu Buffaloes as Kiyohara’s “first pick”.
“In our era, we were never given special treatment just because we were 18 years old.In fact, we were told, “You’re young, so just pitch without complaining.”Like today’s high school rookies, “First, you need to build up your body.” No one had the idea of “From.”
Kintetsu won back-to-back Pacific League titles in 1979 and 1980, but key pitchers such as Akira Suzuki and Takashi Imoto retired. It was time for a generational change.
