Frenchwoman’s Unorthodox Tennis Serve Goes Viral: Why Electronic Line Technology is Changing the Game

When the score was 1:2, 40-15, the Frenchwoman threw the ball into the air while serving, but didn’t play because the throw wasn’t executed precisely enough. Instead of hitting, she stopped the swing of the tennis racket – a completely normal, non-punishable process.

The ball dropped so close to the baseline that the Hawk-Eye system kicked in and let out a loud exclamation. After a brief awkward moment, the scene dissolved into laughter – chair umpire Richard Haigh also smiled.

At some tennis tournaments on the tour and also at Grand Slams such as the Australian Open, the electronic line technology “Electronic Line Calling Live” (ELC Live) is now used, which completely replaces human line judges.

Garcia ultimately lost the match in Doha 5:7, 4:6 against the Japanese and thus continued her decline on the WTA tour. At the Australian Open, the 30-year-old failed in round two against Poland’s Magdalena Frech (4:6, 6:7).
