After having one athlete qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Dominican Judo Federation (Fedojudo) aims to increase that number for the Paris 2024 Games.

Moira Morillo, in the more than 78 kilograms category, is projected as the safest athlete to qualify for the Paris Games. She is followed by Medickson del Orbe, in the 81 kilogram category, who so far has a position due to “continental quota.” The other three athletes, Robert Florentino, Eiraima Silvestre and Antonio Tornal, are also seeking qualification, but face a more challenging path.

The president of Fedojudo, Gilberto García, explained that the classification is cumulative per event, and the ranking is updated every time there is a competition. Each country has the right to classify 14 athletes, seven in each branch.

The competition schedule for qualification is tight, with events in countries such as Uzbekistan, Austria, Georgia, Turkey and Brazil. After a base of training and competition in Brazil, athletes will head to Abu Dhabi for the World Championships in May.

The Creating Olympic Dreams program and the International Judo Federation are facilitating these competitions, with the support of the Ministry of Sports. The combination of these efforts seeks to provide the necessary support for Dominican athletes to achieve their full classification.
