FC Bayern’s sports director: Max Eberl’s empathy

The new sports director of FC Bayern Munich has something that the record champions were previously missing. With his commitment, Max Eberl is also taking a risk.

Max Eberl is undoubtedly brave, and that doesn’t apply to his task of getting the lurching giant tanker FC Bayern on track during its self-discovery phase. The fact that he resigned as sports director in Mönchengladbach at the end of January 2022 on the grounds that he was “exhausted” was not without risk in this industry in which there is an incredible amount of talk but rarely a weakness is revealed. Eberl dared to do that back then, and not everyone appreciated it, especially not because at the end of the same year he suddenly appeared as sports director at, of all places, RB Leipzig, the club whose business conduct he had long been very critical of.

And now, when he starts at FC Bayern, he is taking a risk again with his commitment to continue to seek advice from a psychologist because of his health problems during his time in Mönchengladbach. If, there is little doubt, the industry is the oft-quoted shark tank, at some point someone will be found tasteless enough to work through it.
