[대한민국청소년의회 뉴스 / 김우혁 위드유스 멘토 기자] When talking about the center of Korean sports, Seoul cannot be left out. However, Suwon is a place that is as serious about sports as Seoul. Korean sports are achieving excellent results in many international competitions and are a global sports powerhouse in name and reality. In Korea, a sports powerhouse, Suwon is the only local government where all of Korea’s four major sports professional teams – soccer, baseball, volleyball, and basketball – are based.

A theme exhibition will be held at the Suwon Gwanggyo Museum from November 2, 2023 to February 25, 2024 to present the challenges and glorious moments of sports mecca Suwon and Korean sports history. [스포츠 동감同感, 수원]is in progress.

In this theme exhibition, you can see the history and biography of the Suwon Sports Association, from the organization of the Suwon Sports Association in 1929 to the construction process of Suwon Gymnasium, a women’s handball stadium famous for the movie ‘The Best Moment of Our Lives (Woo Saeng-sun).’

In addition, there are photos of the equipment and equipment worn by Korean athletes at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, including a photo of Son Ki-jeong, who won a gold medal in the marathon event wearing the Japanese flag uniform at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, but covered the Japanese flag with a sapling on the podium because he was embarrassed by the Japanese flag. This is a theme exhibition where you can learn about sports history by exhibiting major scenes in Korean sports history, such as Korea’s Olympic history and the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup hosting process in Suwon, through photos and materials.

What makes this theme game even more special is that it also introduces the Suwon Sports Association business team, which was relatively hidden compared to the professional teams. The team operates 14 sports, including badminton, table tennis, and taekwondo, and is the largest in the country with about 130 people. At last year’s Hangzhou Asian Games, he was performing well enough to win medals in badminton and weightlifting.

According to an interview with Suwon Gwanggyo Museum curator A, ‘I wanted to publicize the achievements of Sogang Min Gwan-sik, who played table tennis in Suwon during high school and had a great influence on the development of Korean sports by establishing the Taereung Athletes’ Village and serving as president of the Korea Sports Council. As a result, Suwon is also achieving excellent results in terms of sports, so the motive for the theme exhibition was said to be ‘meaning that Sogang Min Gwan-sik and Suwon’s sports meet and agree on the theme of sports.’

Sogang Min Gwan-sik graduated from Suwon College of Agriculture and Forestry, the predecessor of Seoul National University’s College of Agriculture, and is leading the Korean sports community and is called the father of the modernization of Korean sports. For Sogang Min Gwan-sik, who spent his school days in Suwon and made Suwon his second hometown, a special exhibition titled ‘Sogang Min Gwan-sik and his collection’ was held at the Suwon Museum in 2010.

This theme exhibition is the second theme exhibition for Sogang Min Gwan-sik, and is being carried out based on memorabilia related to international competitions, donations from athletes, and materials donated by Sogang Min Gwan-sik, who served as president of the Korea Sports Council.

This theme exhibition held at Suwon Gwanggyo Museum will run until February 25th. Operating hours are from 10:00 to 18:00 on the 2nd floor, and is closed every Monday. Adults 2,000 won, teenagers and soldiers 1,000 won, children and seniors free, Suwon citizens receive a 25% discount.
