Egan Bernal met his goal in the O Gran Camiño race in Galicia (Spain). The 27-year-old runner consolidated himself on the podium of the race: he finished third and is once again on the podium in a stage race after two years, nine months and five days, his last podium was when he was crowned champion on May 30 of 2021 at the Giro d’Italia.

These were extreme conditions for the cyclists, the stage had a strong wind storm accompanied by heavy rain that made visibility impossible for the runners.

The organization of the race was forced to shorten the fourth and final stage due to the heavy rains that hit the city of Galicia (Spain). The weather conditions did not allow television signals to cover the O Gran Camiño live at the end.

The weather was not improving, the safety fences located in the last meters of the fourth stage, at the finish line, were falling due to the gusts of wind that came from both sides.

“The strong gusts of wind and the constant rain make circulation difficult in the final part of the race. A shame! With the shortened stage, the cyclists are now 34 kilometers from the finish line,” were the words of the organizers.

At the time the cut was announced, the escape was two minutes and 50 seconds away. “Due to the adverse weather, the stage will end at the first pass of the Monte Aloia Natural Park,” they explained.

It was all drama, a motorcycle belonging to the organization fell after being hit by a gust of wind, while on the official website of the O Gran Camiño they declared the stage finished.

With 250 meters to go before the finish line, the Dane Jonas Vingegaard appeared, taking the stage victory and consolidating himself as champion of the O Gran Camiño for the second consecutive year. The Visma rider won three of four fractions.

Lenny Martínez appeared behind Vingegaard. The Frenchman arrived in second position in the stage and unseated Egan Bernal from second position in the general classification.

The Colombian appeared in the fourth position of the fraction, he stopped on the pedals, but he had little to do to recover seconds. Egan took the third place on the podium and after more than two years he climbs back into the top three places in the race.

It should be remembered that Egan Bernal had already been on the podium this year in the National Cycling Championships in Colombia, he was bronze, in Tunja, in the long-distance event. It took 973 days for the 2019 Tour de France champion to feel like a winner after the brutal accident on January 24, 2022, when he was almost left in a wheelchair and was saved from death.
