Eddie George Reflects on Tennessee State’s Season-Ending Loss and Offensive Coordinator Departure

Eddie George on Tennessee State’s season-ending loss to Tennessee Tech

Eddie George was disappointed with the three-game losing streak with which Tennessee State finished the season.

Recently hired Tennessee State football offensive coordinator Tyler Roehl is leaving to become assistant head coach and running backs coach at Iowa State, according to Tigers coach Eddie George.

Roehl was considered a blockbuster hire by George 30 days ago. He was brought in to replace Theron Aych, who spent two seasons with TSU before being fired at the end of the 2023 season.

Roehl, 37, spent the previous five seasons as offensive coordinator at FCS power North Dakota State. He helped the Bison reach the FCS national championship three times and win the title in 2019 and 2021. In total, Roehl was part of seven FCS titles and eight Missouri Valley Football Conference titles with the Bison.

North Dakota State finished ninth nationally in total offense in 2023, averaging 435.9 yards per game, and was fourth in rushing (237.3 yards).

With Roehl in charge of the offense, North Dakota State ranked in the top 10 of the FCS national poll for five seasons, and briefly ranked in the top 15 in 2023. The Bison reached the semifinals in the FCS playoffs last season and the quarterfinals in 2020.

Roehl was named to the American Football Coaches Association’s “35 Under 35” coaches list in 2020.

Roehl, who had not yet moved his family from Fargo, North Dakota, replaces Jordan Langs at Iowa State. Langs spent just one season with the Cyclones, who were 11th in the Big 12 in rushing (119.9 yards) in 2023.

TSU went 6-5 in 2023, its first winning season since 2017, but it finished seventh in the Big South/Ohio Valley Conference in total offense (303.5 yards). It was ninth out of 10 teams in the conference and 106th nationally in passing yards per game (155.1).

George is expected to move quickly to replace Roehl; the Tigers are scheduled to start spring practice March 24.
