Czech Tennis Association Scandal: Massive Fraud Allegations Rock the Sport!

Czech sport is rocked by massive fraud allegations and arrests!

The focus: the tennis association under the all-powerful boss Ivo Kaderka (60). Police and detectives from the National Center for Combating Organized Crime had recently searched association rooms for three days on suspicion of subsidy fraud. And they apparently found what they were looking for.

On Thursday, a court in Prague decided that Kaderka, who is not only president of the Czech Tennis Association but also boss of the influential Tennis Europe academy, should be arrested. Vojtěch Flégl (56), an influential tennis official and former ATP professional player, is also in custody.

Also charged: Three-time Grand Slam doubles champion (Paris 1996 and 1997, US Open 1997) Daniel Vacek. However, he is currently in Dubai (United Arab Emirates).

Czech Republic tennis swamp is being drained! President Ivo Kaderka has been at the helm for 26 years and, according to information from those close to Czech sports, has developed into an almost unrestricted ruler of the tennis association. He is known for his tough actions against opponents.

Navratilova: “I will never speak to him!”

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova (67/winner of 59 Grand Slam tournaments) said of him at Wimbledon 2006: “He is a bully and a jealous man. I will never speak to him in my life.”

Now Kaderka, father-in-law of Lukáš Krpálek (33), a two-time judo Olympic champion from Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2021, has to speak to the police and investigative authorities!

What exactly is it about? State subsidies for tennis tournaments are said to have been misused or not used as intended. In 2021, the association received over CZK 141 million (EUR 5.5 million) in public money from the National Sports Agency to promote tennis throughout the Czech Republic. The association made almost a third of the funds – more than 1.6 million euros – available to the Orel Jednota Praha – Balkán association, whose chairman is Vojtěch Flégl, one of the closest confidants of the association’s president Ivo Kaderka.

Behavior during wiretapping operations was suspicious

Flégl’s club was supposed to finance tennis tournaments with money from the association. He commissioned private companies for individual services, including those owned by Flégl or his wife. When the accounts of a particular tournament were analyzed, it was discovered that in some cases these companies had also billed the club for services provided by someone else.

The police decision to initiate criminal prosecution, which was published by news.cz, shows that investigators also carried out wiretapping operations during the year-long investigation. “We will do it so that no one finds out,” the accused whispered, among other things, when it came to the reimbursement of bills for tennis tournaments. They are also said to have taken notes on paper during the meeting so as not to have to talk.

Pretrial detention due to possible witness influence

Now the police seem to have solid evidence against Kaderka and Co. The arrest of Kaderka and Flegel is considered exceptional.

And: The non-public hearing lasted two and a half hours on Thursday evening. The court decided to take him into custody because of possible witness influence.

Tomas Grivna, Kaderka’s lawyer, told the Seznam Zpravy news portal: “We have filed a complaint. My client denies any criminal activity.”
