Chess tournament in Weissenhaus: Hit it from the first move

From today on, a hotel on the German Baltic Sea will be the venue for the first long tournament with a chess variant that is likely to be foreign to many amateurs and, yes, should be foreign: the pieces on the front row are not as usual, but in a different one , random sequence. Bobby Fischer, the legendary former world champion, invented it, which is why this special discipline is called Fischer chess.

Normally in chess, in the basic position, the rooks are on the outside, next to them are the knights, then the bishops, and the king and queen are in the middle. In Fischer chess, the pieces can be mixed up. A knight can be where the king actually stands, a rook can be in the place of a bishop. The usual basic position is only one of 960 possibilities, which is why English is also referred to as Chess 960.
