In the Champions League, the first round of 16 game between PSV Eindhoven and Borussia Dortmund ended 1-1 (0-1). BVB took the lead in the 24th minute with a goal from Donyell Malen, but were unable to repeat their performance from the group stage. Luuk de Jong finally scored the equalizer for the Dutch (56th). Borussia can still hope for their first quarter-finals in the premier class since 2021.

The team had to do without Niklas Süle during the game. The national player was out due to a short-term illness and was therefore replaced by Mats Hummels in the defensive back four. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel also didn’t perform as expected. The 26-year-old Swiss was still warming up, but according to BVB he was not available for coach Edin Terzić due to muscular problems. Substitute keeper Alex Meyer moved into the starting line-up for Kobel.
