BBL Player’s Shoe Disaster: From Overtime Thriller to Bankrupt Sole

The BBL has probably never seen anything like this…

Brandon Tischler (23) from the Löwen Braunschweig will not soon forget this game. Last weekend he and his team met the Bamberg Baskets – the club in his hometown. In a true overtime thriller, the Lions retained the upper hand 91:90.

So far, so exciting. But those weren’t the main reasons why the match was a memorable one for him.

Tischler was unable to finish the match. It was his left shoe that was to blame!

In the middle of the game, almost the entire sole suddenly came off. It happened midway through the third quarter. During an attack, Tischler noticed for the first time that something was wrong, that something might be coming off the shoe. He shouldn’t have been mistaken.

Tischler to SPORT BILD: “Two or three actions later I made a sharp change of direction. Then the whole sole ripped away. Then it was over.”

Stupid for Tischler: He didn’t have a spare pair with him. They were all in the training center, the Tunica Hall in Braunschweig. But the game will be played in the Volkswagen Hall.

Tischler: “I still have around ten pairs of shoes in our training hall. This thought was particularly striking at that moment.”

And further: “I always have two or if not three pairs of shoes with me. I’ve only worn this pair once before in training and I really liked them. I assumed: ‘These are brand new, there’s no way anything’s going to happen to them.’ And then, of all times, it happened.”

Braunschweig’s coach Jesus Ramirez (44) took a time out because something was obviously wrong with Tischler’s defensive behavior. It didn’t take long before he knew why.

Tischler: “He asked me why I stopped playing. I then just pointed to my shoe. Then he threw his hands over his head and just said: ‘Find a solution!'”

But there wasn’t. At least not quickly. Which was also due to Tischler’s huge shoe size of 50.5. So he couldn’t borrow replacement kicks from one of his teammates. Tischler: “My teammates all have smaller feet than me.”

But there is still his twin brother Nicholas in the squad – with the same shoe size. Brandon explains: “My brother was on the field the whole time, so changing shoes would only have been possible during time off. But after we tried to tape my shoe to my foot as tightly as a boxing glove, I would have had to be cut out first. So that wasn’t possible either.”

But the repaired shoe didn’t convince coach Ramirez, as Tischler reports: “Our coach said he wouldn’t let me play like that because the risk of injury was too high.” And so he was only left with the bitter role of spectator throughout the last quarter and in extra time .

The ridicule from the other players afterwards was limited. Tischler: “Everyone was surprised that I didn’t have a second pair of shoes with me, but luckily since we won I didn’t have to spend any. I’m grateful to them for fighting like they did.”

Already on Sunday (3.30 p.m. live on Dyn/display) the next home game is coming up for the Lions. Then the Würzburg Baskets are guests.

And carpenter? He will probably be watched closely by the coach and his colleagues. He says with a grin: “I will be well prepared and will definitely compete with two pairs of shoes. I’ll put on my favorite shoes and nothing should really happen.”
