Battle Underway Between Ivory Coast and DRC in African Cup of Nations Semi-Final

Fresh break

We talk a lot on the Ivorian side and we also have to treat Boly, who is bleeding from the arch after taking a teammate’s foot on a clearance.

WARN A BOUT PORTANT!

IT WAS OFFSIDE! It wasn’t reported but if there had been a goal, it would have been canceled. Wissa had stumbled on Fofana anyway, after a cross from Moutoussamy which he had received alone in the open area.

The DRC begins to lay down the game

Possession is slipping away from the Ivorians. The Congolese gained confidence after a somewhat tense start to the match where they quickly looked for their attackers.

Fofana in difficulty again!

He barely pushes back Masuaku’s corner, very inward, without really boxing but putting his hands in opposition. He is not at all reassuring about the start of the match.

Bakambu tent the chisel!

He is blocked by Ndicka, but it was well attempted in the area. He could only try that after too far a check.

Bakambu fouls Seri

Ivory Coast is doing well, losing the ball there would have been very dangerous. But there was a fault from Bakambu, who was very involved at the start of the match.

Kakuta hits with a right!

It is diverted and captured by Fofana. It could have been tricky.

ADINGRA AT THE POST!

On a long cross from the right, Adingra arrives launched and climbs higher than the defender. He places his head very close to Mpasi’s post, it’s the best Ivorian action of the start of the match.

Adingra overflows on the left side!

This is his first one-on-one action. His cross is pushed back for a corner, the stadium gives voice for the first time in the match.

New corner for the DRC

It doesn’t help but the referee is obliged to regularly take the players from both teams into the area.

Gradel can’t take the ball away

But Ivorian offensives often go through its right side. We have yet to find Adingra on the other side.

BAKAMBU OPENS THE SCORING… BUT FOUL SAYS THE REFEREE

BIG MISTAKE BY FOFANA! On the corner, the Ivorian goalkeeper catches the ball poorly. Bakambu, on the lookout, concludes with a nod. But the referee quickly whistles for a foul by the Congolese striker, who took the ball from Fofana’s hands with his foot.

First corner for the DRC

On very quick action from their own area. Kakuta made the difference with a one-touch pass to the right.

Gradel searched in the surface

On a touch, the captain of the evening is touched but comes up against Moutoussamy, who gets a goal kick.

The Ivorians hold the ball at the start of the match

The Congolese, for their part, try to plan ahead very quickly from their first recovery.

Let’s go to the Ebimpé Olympic Stadium

The Elephants kick off. Ivory Coast is only one match away from a final in its African Cup of Nations, against Nigeria.

Kick-off imminent

The opportunity to recall the evening’s compositions.

The composition of Ivory Coast: Fofana – Singo, Boly, Ndicka, Konan – Seri, Kessie – Adingra, Fofana, Gradel – Haller.

The composition of the DRC: Pain – Pickel, Moutoussamy – Elijah, Kakuta, Wissa – Things.

The winner of the evening will face the Nigerian in the final

The Super Eagles beat South Africa on penalties in the other semi-final.

Ivory Coast aims for 4th final in 18 years

After losing the first two, in 2006 and 2012, the Elephants finally won in 2015 for the second CAN in their history. On the other hand, the Ivorians rarely lose in the semi-finals: the last time was in 1994.

The DRC has been waiting for a final for 50 years

In 1974, the country was still called Zaire when it reached – and won – its last final in the African Cup of Nations, winning its second title in the competition on this occasion. Since then, the DRC has lost its two semi-finals, in 1998 and especially in 2015, against Côte d’Ivoire.

Two miraculous teams

Ivory Coast, we talked about it during this CAN, comes back out of nowhere. Almost eliminated in the group stage, she joined the eighth and was narrowly among the four best third-placed players. Then it went to penalties against Senegal, after equalizing in the 86th minute, and at the end of extra time against Mali (2-1), after an equalizer in the 90th and a winning goal in the 125th.

DR Congo, for its part, came out of the groups without winning a single match but obtaining three draws. They then eliminated Egypt on penalties, before a clearer 3-1 victory against Guinea in the quarter-final.

Kakuta back in the DRC eleven

Unavailable for the two previous matches against Egypt and Guinea, the playmaker is back in the starting lineup. For the rest, coach Sébastien Desabre renews the same men as in the previous round.

The composition of the DRC: Pain – Pickel, Moutoussamy – Elijah, Kakuta, Wissa – Things.

Ivory Coast with Haller, but without Aurier and Pepe

Emerse Faé is deprived of four players suspended for this semi-final: Odilon, Diakité, Kouamé and especially Aurier, starting captain during the last two matches. This definitely requires some adjustments. The coach also decided to leave Nicolas Pepe on the bench after his start against Mali.

The composition of Ivory Coast: Fofana – Singo, Boly, Ndicka, Konan – Seri, Kessie – Adingra, Fofana, Gradel – Haller.

“We’re worthless but we’re moving forward!”, smiles Gervinho on the Ivory Coast course

In an interview with RMC Sport, Gervinho, former Ivorian striker and African champion in 2015, takes up the chant of his country’s supporters to qualify the Elephants’ journey to the CAN before the semi-final against DR Congo (9 p.m.), this Wednesday.
