Helen Bekele Granted Swiss Citizenship and Eligibility to Compete in Major Championships

Helen Bekele can now represent Switzerland in major international championships, Swiss Athletics confirmed to Keystone-ATS.

Born in Ethiopia 30 years ago and naturalized last February, the Stade Genève athlete is now a Swiss citizen, the Sport-Center learned.

Helen Bekele has obtained her white cross passport and will therefore be able to compete in the Paris Games if she is, as one might expect, selected by Swiss Olympic. She is worth 2h19’44 in the marathon, a time achieved in 2023 in Berlin which makes her the 70th performer in history, and a possible candidate for the Olympic podium.
