Nevertheless, baseball guru Theo Epstein (50) is becoming a key figure in the search for a successor to Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp (56)! The club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have hired Epstein as a senior adviser and want him to play a key role in the search for the next coach.
Epstein, who helped the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs to World Series victories, is also a minority owner of FSG and will advise all of the group’s sports teams. In addition to Liverpool and the Red Sox, these also include the Pittsburgh Penguins ice hockey club, the RFK Racing motorsport team and the Boston Common golf club.

It is reported from the USA that Epstein will work closely with FSG President Mike Gordon to find Klopp’s successor. Klopp surprisingly announced at the end of January that he would step down at the end of the season because he needed a break.
Epstein said: “I am thrilled and honored to return to FSG. This is truly a unique opportunity for me – a chance to work with people who mean a lot to me, a chance to challenge myself in new areas; and a chance to use my experiences and perspectives to help others succeed and win at the highest levels.”

Epstein was general manager of the Red Sox twice in the 2000s and then moved to the Cubs. FSG boss John Henry says of him: “We are very proud to welcome Theo to the FSG family and look forward to the insights and contributions he will make.”
Xabi Alonso (42) is currently the favorite to succeed Klopp. The Leverkusen coach still has a contract until 2026 – but could leave the club for Liverpool in the summer thanks to an agreement with the Bayer bosses. Also in the running is Roberto De Zerbi (44/also contract until 2026), who is in a strong 7th place in the Premier League with his club Brighton & Hove Albion.
